Test Overview:
Bilirubin levels are measured to help diagnose and treat liver, hemolytic, hematologic, and metabolic problems like hepatitis and gallbladder blockage. The measurement of direct bilirubin can assist in distinguishing between hepatic diseases. The direct (conjugated) fraction accounts for the majority of the rise in total bilirubin associated with obstructive jaundice. Hepatitis causes a rise in both direct and indirect bilirubin in the blood.
