Test Overview:
The Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) causes a number of clinically significant human viral illnesses, ranging in severity from mild to fatal. Genital tract infections, newborn herpes, meningoencephalitis, keratoconjunctivitis, and gingivostomatitis are some of the clinical symptoms. There are two HSV serotypes that are antigenically related. HSV Type 2 infections are more common in the genital tract and in newborns, whereas HSV Type 1 infections are more common in non-genital regions. In most cases, a specific type isn’t required for diagnosis or therapy. Using the type-specific assay, the average duration of seroconversion is 25 days. This assay’s performance in a pediatric population, for neonatal screening, or for testing immunocompromised patients has not been proven.
